Academic reading comprehension with ~700-word passages and 10 questions each.

Question Types

Factual information

3–5 per passage

Find the answer directly in the text. Watch out for paraphrases.

Negative factual information

0–2 per passage

Look for the option that does NOT appear. Verify the three correct ones first.

Inference

1–2 per passage

The answer isn't stated explicitly — deduce it from the tone or logic of the text.

Rhetorical purpose

1–2 per passage

Ask 'why does the author mention X?' — look for the function of that paragraph.

Vocabulary

3–4 per passage

The paragraph context is more useful than the general meaning of the word.

Insert a sentence

1 per passage

Read the new sentence and look for logical connectors with the surrounding paragraphs.

Prose summary

1 per passage

Choose 3 of 6 main ideas. Eliminate minor or supporting details.

Key Strategies

  1. 1.Read the first paragraph fully to understand the central topic.
  2. 2.Then read the question and return to the passage to find the answer.
  3. 3.Mentally note the main point of each paragraph.
  4. 4.For vocabulary questions, substitute each option into the sentence and pick the most natural fit.
  5. 5.The summary question comes last — use everything you learned from the full passage.
