How does the new 1–6 TOEFL scale affect graduate admissions?
Since January 21, 2026 the TOEFL iBT reports each section on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments, with the overall score being the average of the four sections. During the transition period, score reports also show a comparable 0–120 total, so admissions pages that still cite the old scale remain usable alongside the new one.
Can I get into graduate school with a low TOEFL score?
