In July 2023, ETS overhauled the TOEFL iBT, cutting total test time from roughly 3 hours to under 2 hours. The 2026 version of the exam follows this updated structure — and if you have been studying from older materials, some of what you know may be outdated.
The Current TOEFL iBT Structure

What Changed from the Old Format
- ·Reading went from 3–4 passages to exactly 2 passages. Time dropped from 54–72 minutes to 36 minutes.
- ·Listening dropped one lecture set. Total time reduced from ~41 to 36 minutes.
- ·The Writing section replaced the old Independent essay with an Academic Discussion task — you now respond to a professor's forum post, not write a standalone essay.
- ·No more experimental (unscored) section. The old format included hidden trial questions; the new one does not.
- ·Total test time: approximately 2 hours, down from roughly 3 hours.
Scoring
Scoring changed on January 21, 2026: each section is now reported on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments, and your overall score is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band — not the sum of 0–30 section scores as before. For a two-year transition period, score reports also show a comparable 0–120 total. Reading and Listening are still scored automatically; Speaking and Writing are still rated against rubrics before being mapped onto the band scale.
Key insight
Because Reading is now only 2 passages, each question carries more weight. One poorly answered passage can significantly lower your section score. Focus on consistency, not just speed.

The Academic Discussion task replaced the old Independent Writing essay. Instead of writing a 300+ word argumentative essay in 30 minutes, you now have 10 minutes to read a professor's question and two student responses, then write your own contribution of at least 100 words.
This format rewards students who can engage with others' ideas and add something new — not just repeat points already made by classmates. The target is 150+ words for a strong score.
What Remains the Same
- ·The four sections and their order — the scale they are reported on changed in 2026, the structure did not.
- ·The Integrated Writing task (read a passage, listen to a lecture, write 180–220 words comparing both).
- ·Speaking task types: 2 independent opinions + 2 integrated summaries.
- ·Question types in Reading (factual, inference, vocabulary, prose summary, etc.).
- ·The test is still administered at authorized test centers or via TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
Score Requirements by Program
Most U.S. universities require a total score of 80–100 for graduate admission, with some top programs requiring 100–110+. Graduate programs in health sciences (medicine, nursing, pharmacy) often require individual section minimums of 26+ per section. Check your target program's requirements directly — they vary significantly.
Study tip
If you are using prep materials dated before mid-2023, verify the format before using them. Some older books still reference 3-passage Reading sections and 30-minute Independent Writing essays that no longer exist.
